Background

“Bloodline” is a rotoscoped lyric video of the song “Bloodline” by Luke Hemmings created using Photoshop and After Effects.

This project's objective was to provide a visual aid to the song with the goal of enhancing the listening experience by deepening the understanding of the lyrics and evoking emotion.

Process

Target Audience

Who is watching this video, and why?! Most viewers span across three categories:

  • Music Listeners

  • Luke Hemmings Fans

  • Visual Arts/Dance Enthusiasts

By angling my lyric video towards these groups, I am more likely to gain engagement.

Choreography

The design process started way before any ideas were brought to life in Adobe. “Bloodline” features a rotoscoped dancer; a dancer who is real and is me! My very first step was finding a song that I could resonate with and dance to. “Bloodline” by Luke Hemmings was the perfect mix of a moving melody and deep emotion. Once finding the perfect song, I spent the day creating the perfect mix of skill and movement that would captivate the audience.

Research

After letting my choreography shape the piece, I took to researching lyrics videos to see how I could incorporate dance movements to elevate the piece.

Why are lyric videos so important?

  • Improves understanding of lyrics

  • Drives engagement

  • Boosts SEO

Design Process

With these three main points in mind, I took to story boarding to layout where each lyric would go in relation to the dancer on the screen. Once that was set, I went in and rotoscoped the full dance frame by frame in Photoshop, and then brought it into After Effects where I keyframed the background colors and lyrics into each part of the video.

By placing specific emphasis on certain phrases and words, each lyric has its own weight to it, which helps the audience form a deeper understanding of the meaning behind the song. This deeper understanding of the lyrics paired with the choreography also forms an emotional connection to the song; which will overall increase engagement as audiences have something visual to connect the song back to.

Storyboard

Final Product

After many tweaks and revisions to clean everything up, I am proud to present “Bloodline” a rotoscoped lyric video aimed to form a deeper understanding of the lyrics and an emotional connection to the song.
